The Art Form

Kuchipudi

Kuchipudi is a classical dance style that derives its name from the village of Kuchelapuram in Andhra Pradesh, India. Rooted deep in the Bhakti devotional movement of the seventh century, it was the ascetic Siddhendra Yogi in the 14th century who gave it a new definition and direction.

Originally a male-only dance drama tradition, groups of men traveled from village to village enacting stories from Hindu mythology. It is only in the last century that women were introduced to this art form. Kuchipudi in its present form is the result of the vision of stalwarts like Padmabhushan Vempati Chinna Satyam and the late Vedantam Laksminarayana Shastry.

The technique makes use of fast rhythmic footwork and sculpturesque body movements. Stylized miming through hand gestures and subtle facial expression is combined with realistic acting, occasionally including spoken dialogue. With its blend of Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressional dance), and Natya (dance drama), Kuchipudi is unique among Indian classical dances.

Shaping dancers since 1996

Focused on promoting cultural awareness about Indian classical dance through the Kuchipudi style, Kuchipudi Kalakshetra has been organizing performances, productions, and workshops for nearly three decades.

It is one of the earliest Kuchipudi-only schools in Texas, encouraging children and adults from all backgrounds to study the ancient art form. The school strives to impart traditional teachings adapted to current times.

Having started with a handful of pupils in a modest apartment in Addison, the school now has a healthy enrollment of over 50 students at three locations in the DFW metroplex. Students start with basic steps and Jathis, moving on to complex solo items, with many opportunities to perform on stage throughout their journey.
